Bush has issued an executive order that effectively bypasses the Fifth Amendment, allowing the government to arbitrarily confiscate property. Amongst other things, the text of the executive order specifies that people “undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people” may have all their property confiscated by the government. This statement is intentionally vague, and, as far as I can tell, could encompass peaceful protesters who are opposed to US foreign policy. Equally concerning is that this executive order appears to be, in my opinion, in violation of the Fifth Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which guarantees that citizens will not be deprived of property unless so determined by a jury.
