This is a short essay I wrote towards the end of my PhD, where I share insights I’ve gained from being a PhD student. I discuss what it is, in my opinion, that makes a good scientist, the importance of self-confidence and fostering a positive work environment, how to become an independent researcher, and thoughts on work ethics. I also share some thoughts on the actual process of writing a PhD, as well as finding a job afterwards. This essay was originally intended as a personal reminiscence, but I hope it will be of value to other PhD students to be, or indeed anybody else.
Quite a few students should find this useful, and in Germany the translation will be appreciated.
